THE FICTIONAL CITY SERIES
The images in this series have been drawn from architectural relics and monuments, all from cities in which I have either lived or visited. I am interested in creating my own version of the ideal city, borrowing from specific, sometimes overlooked pieces of the built landscape and reworking, isolating and fragmenting these monuments so that they become part of my own fictional city. By disengaging the image from the landscape around it I am also hoping to underscore its unique beauty and power, which can often be overwhelmed by its surroundings.
I’ve left a great deal of negative space in each piece to highlight the opposition of the object and its environs. In this practice I hope to find the tension between the remembered and forgotten, between ‘the city’ as it stands and as it has been, and between what is real and what is invented.
